A Momentous Milestone: 10 Million Trips on the I-85 Express LanesPosted Dec 12, 2013 by Malika Reed Wilkins, Director, Marketing & Communications
November was a momentous month at SRTA. Not only did we celebrate the closure of the Georgia 400 toll plaza, but the I-85 Express Lanes reached a milestone of its own: registering the 10 millionth trip taken on the roadway. This notable achievement comes on the heels of a record-breaking month of usage in October, showing that more and more motorists are choosing to use the Express Lanes to get them where they want to go, more reliably.
Peach Pass customers Carol and Richard from Watkinsville took the 10 millionth trip just after rush hour on November 5. The couple uses the Express Lanes to travel from their home in Oconee County to medical appointments in downtown Atlanta. Carol said the Express Lanes ensure that they get to these appointments on time and without a lot stress. The couple, who got a Peach Pass just prior to Richard’s heart surgery when they knew they would be making a lot of trips into the city, noted that the having the option to use the Express Lanes gives them “peace of mind.”
For making the 10 millionth trip, we surprised Carol and Richard with a Peach Pass goodie bag. In addition, WSB pitched in and provided Carol and Richard with an opportunity to enjoy a private tour of the studio and lunch with our good friend Captain Herb Emory.
Here at SRTA, we know this trip means so much more than just Carol and Richard’s story. In just two short years since the Lanes opened, we’ve seen consistent growth in lane usage, reaching an all-time high in October. More than 21,000 trips were taken on an average weekday, and a record-setting total of almost 550,000 trips were taken during the month of October! This year has been a record-breaking year for the Express Lanes, and it’s been exciting to see the continuing momentum. Dynamically-priced managed lanes are designed to empower drivers with more commuting choices, and we appreciate all of our customers for choosing to use their Peach Pass.
In the coming years, metro Atlantans will see more dynamically-priced managed lanes, including the I-75 Express Lanes in Henry and Clayton counties (scheduled to open in 2016) and the I-75/575 Northwest Corridor project in Cobb and Cherokee counties (scheduled to open in 2018). Stay tuned to learn more about these projects as they develop, and, in the meantime, consider getting your own “peace of mind” by registering for a Peach Pass today.
